Thirteen

Jack insisted that we take a cab to the bar. I wanted a limo, but he said it would only draw more attention to ourselves when we showed up, so I agreed. After the shamelessly touristy day we had, visiting all the sights and taking all the expected corny photos, I was tired of being in the spotlight. The photos from the day had given the press enough material to last their readers a month. I had offered to wear a disguise to the bar, but Jack told me I needed to chill out and stop giving myself so much importance. I threw a spoon at him. Jack had even invited Scott to come along to the bar, which was a pleasant surprise. I felt oddly proud, like I had just unlocked a new level of our friendship. That, or he was hoping I’d launch into my alleged love for ancient history again and make a fool of myself.

Spending the entire day with Jack and my two best friends had been so fun, I almost felt guilty. It wasn’t like Milo and I didn’t have a good time when we were together, but we were just never together much anymore. These days, all I had to look forward to were his voicemails and the occasional can’t talk right now text.

When the five of us walked into Andrew’s bar, we were all tired but still buzzing off leftover adrenaline from the day. The bar was dimly lit, with candles on every tall, circular table that stood scattered around. Everything was dark brown, contrasting with the mason jars that were hung in every corner, filled with little fairy lights. It was like having a candlelight dinner with a whole bar. The place wasn’t quite full, but it had pulled a decent crowd. Despite the scarcely few middle-aged drinkers, it was obvious that everyone else was a student. Next to the unlit fireplace at the back, there was a makeshift dance floor, where people were enjoying some old school R&B as a background score to their conversations. It was such a different vibe to the LA scene, and I was surprised that I immediately loved it. Aria found a table close to the wide front window, giving us a great view of all the passersby.

“Oh god,” I groaned over the music. “People are so going to recognize me here. I totally should have worn a wig.”

“Okay, firstly, should I be concerned that you have a lot of wigs?” Jack asked. “And secondly, who cares if they recognize you?”

“I care! I’m not in the mood to autograph people’s greasy bar napkins.”

“It’s real dark in here anyway,” Scott assured me. “No one’s even looked in our direction yet.”

“Time for drinks!” Aria announced happily, throwing her arm around Jack’s shoulders. “Tonight is going to be so lit!”

“We’re not here to party!” I told her. “This is just a quick pit stop.”

“Yeah, a pit stop with drinks. Come on, I know Scott wants to party! He can keep me and Jack company at the bar.
